Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition characterized by high blood glucose levels. It can occur either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or because the body does not use insulin effectively. Diabetes is mainly classified into two types: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Types of diabetes
There are several types of diabetes, the most common being:
• Type 1 diabetes: occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas, which produce insulin.
• Type 2 diabetes: the most common form, which occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin.
• Gestational diabetes: occurs during pregnancy and usually goes away after birth, although it can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later.
Symptoms of diabetes
Symptoms of diabetes can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition, but often include:
• excessive thirst and frequent urination
• excessive hunger
• unexplained weight loss
• tiredness
• blurred vision
• frequent infections
