Sclerotherapy is the treatment of varicose and dilated veins by injection. It is done in the consulting room, with no hospital stay and no general anesthesia, and you walk out after the session. At NOVOMED CLINIC, a session for one leg costs 900 lei with one vial or 1,100 lei with two vials, and the vascular surgery consultation is included in the price.
What sclerotherapy is
The doctor injects into the affected vein a substance that irritates the vein wall and makes it close. The closed vein no longer carries blood, and the blood flow moves to healthy veins. Over time, the treated vein is absorbed by the body and fades from view.
Who it is suitable for
- spider veins (telangiectasia) and reticular veins
- small and medium varicose veins on the calf or thigh
- veins left after previous varicose vein surgery
Sclerotherapy does not replace treatment of reflux in the large veins. If the Doppler ultrasound shows insufficiency of the saphenous vein, the doctor tells you directly and refers you to the right solution, even if it is not done at our clinic.
How it works
- The vascular surgery consultation. The doctor examines your legs, listens to your symptoms and decides whether sclerotherapy is indicated. The consultation is included in the price of the session.
- The session itself. The injections are given with a fine needle, directly into the targeted veins. It usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
- After the session. You get up and walk straight away. The doctor tells you what to do in the following days and whether you need a compression stocking.
How many sessions are needed
It depends on how many veins there are and on their size. Some patients need a single session, others need several, a few weeks apart. The doctor tells you at the consultation what to expect, before you start.
What can happen afterwards
These are common and go away on their own: small bruises around the injection sites, a brown discoloration along the treated vein, a feeling of tightness for a few days. Serious reactions are rare. The doctor gives you a number to call if anything worries you.

No referral needed. NOVOMED CLINIC has no contract with the Romanian national health insurance fund (CNAS); consultations and procedures are paid in full.
Frequently asked questions
Does it hurt? You feel the needle pricks, but a fine needle is used and no anesthesia is needed.
Can I go to work afterwards? Yes. You do not need sick leave for the session itself.
When can I see the result? Small veins fade within a few weeks, larger ones within a few months. The result is not instant.
Can it be done in summer? Yes, but you should avoid sun on the treated area for a while, because it can make the brown discoloration more visible.
Do varicose veins come back? Sclerotherapy treats the existing veins. If there is an untreated underlying cause, new veins can appear over time. This is why the Doppler ultrasound beforehand matters.
